The City of Clarksville consists of multiple departments of varying sizes to include: Building & Codes, City Court, City Garage, Finance, Fire, Gas & Water, Housing and Community Development, Human Resources/Loss Prevention, Internal Audit, Legal, Mayor, Parking Authority, Parks & Recreation/Golf Courses, Purchasing, Police, Streets, and Transit.  Over 1200 regular fulltime employees, in addition to a fluctuating number of seasonal and part-time employees, are employed by the City of Clarksville. Positions vary from entry level to professional and include categories ranging from administrative to accounting to mechanical to technology to grounds and maintenance to equipment operations to meter reading to engineering to utilities and dozens of categories between. The City of Clarksville is a drug free workforce and equal opportunity employer. All regular fulltime applicants must pass a background check, a drug screen, a physical, and other position-specific requirements before being hired by the City. Orientations are held every other Monday. All regular fulltime employees must attend a new employee orientation hosted by the Human Resources Department prior to starting their new position on the Monday after each payday.  A list of orientation dates for the remainder of 2021 may be found here.

With a few exceptions, City employees are paid on a bi-weekly basis and the employees’ first paycheck is issued approximately one month after their initial start date. All regular fulltime employees must undergo an initial probationary period of at least twelve months (eighteen months for sworn Police) during which time they are not afforded due process rights.

In addition to many other benefits, the City fully contributes to a 457(b) retirement plan through the Tennessee Consolidated Retirement System (TCRS) on each regular fulltime employee’s behalf. Applicable employees are fully vested after five years of fulltime employment.

Employees are able to apply for other positions throughout the City after they have been employed for at least six months in their most recent position.
